Music, Writing, and Road Trips

12 07 2013

Sorry I haven’t been around lately; I’ve been busy with finishing up the school year, finals, other projects, and… bleh. That and my life hasn’t been very interesting as of late!

Tomorrow, I’ll be embarking on a road trip down to California to see friends and family. It’s very nostalgic, going back to a place I used to call home. I’ll be trading my trusty laptop for a pen and a journal, to hopefully go back to the routine of writing as it’s been a while since I’ve had a good writing session.

While I’m down there, I’m also going to a concert in Pomona. The band, called Sick Puppies, is releasing their new album, Connect, just days before the gig, so I’m absolutely stoked for it! They’ll be playing a lot of songs off the new record, and you can listen to their new single here:

Later on in the summer, Three Days Grace will be coming to town. I’m still not sure if I should get tickets to go or not; not exactly the biggest fan of their newest album. Matt’s been doing a great job filling in for Adam though, in my opinion. Halestorm and the Carnival of Madness (Shinedown, Papa Roach) are also coming to Washington later in the fall, and it bums me out that both amazing concerts are during school days! I’d personally be glad to skip school to go see my favorite bands live, of course, but unfortunately it’s not quite that simple.

Another band I’ve definitely been inspired by for these past few months is the one and only British metalcore Bring Me The Horizon. Their newest album, Sempiternal, is one of the best records I’ve ever heard. Comparing it to some of their older work, it’s clear that their sound has been shifting from metalcore/deathcore to something more along the lines of hard rock. One of my favorite songs off the album would be “Go To Hell, For Heaven’s Sake”:

Music has been such a big inspiration for me, and it shows in the bits of writing I’ve been half-heartedly attempting at. Kind of the same way bands change their sound over the years, my own writing style has been changing as well. I dunno, it’s just interesting to think about. Going on a trip without connecting to the Internet also means less distractions for me, and though it’ll be a pain not to be as connected with friends here, I think it’ll be worth it.
